Hey, you know it’s Christmas time again in Barbados, we Bajans sure know how to throw a fete! This year, we’re all set for the Christmas Wonderland Festival, coming up on December 16, 2023. If you never been to one of our Christmas festivals, you are missing out big time!
First thing, when you step into the festival grounds, it’s like you just walk into a true Bajan Christmas postcard. The place decked out with all the trappings of a tropical Christmas – we talking about palm trees with fairy lights, and even a few snowmen made out of sand, ’cause why not? You can almost hear the calypso Christmas carols in the air!
Now, let’s chat ’bout the food. We’ve got the greatest of them all – jug jug, which is like a Christmas gift in itself, cou-cou and flying fish, and of course, the Christmas ham glazed with that sweet Bajan rum. And for sweets, you must try the great cake – it’s what we call our rum cake, soaked in rum and full of fruits and nuts.
But Christmas in Barbados isn’t just about the food, it’s about the whole vibe. The festival got all sorts of things to see and do. We got local artisans selling handcrafted gifts. There’s also live entertainment. You can expect some top-notch local acts, bringing the sounds of soca, calypso, and maybe a lil’ reggae to spice up the night. And, of course, no Bajan festival is complete without some good old-fashioned limbo – how low can you go?
For the little ones, there’s plenty to keep them entertained too. Santa Claus, or as we call him, Father Christmas, makes his grand entrance on a brightly decorated local maxi taxi, handing out sweets and gifts. The kiddies’ faces light up brighter than Rudolph’s nose!
And let’s not forget the grand finale – the fireworks! When the night sky over Bridgetown lights up with those dazzling colors, it’s like all of Barbados is celebrating together. It’s a sight to behold and the perfect end to a magical night.
So, if you in Barbados on December 16, you really should check out the Christmas Wonderland Festival. It’s more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of Bajan culture, food, music, and that incomparable Christmas spirit. Bring you family, bring you friends, and come soak in the joy and warmth of a Bajan Christmas. You won’t regret it!
Merry Christmas to one and all, and see you at the festival!
